Project: Value-Added Steps

Goal
Equip growing communities to begin food processing - for local market and export.
Benefits
- More Income: over 50% more income from cacao than fair trade premiums alone.
- Employs Women: in safe, community-based contexts.

Overview
When cacao-farming communities begin transforming their agricultural produce into foods, they may not be immediately ready to sell finished products to the public.
In this case, performing value-added "next steps" creates an income opportunity and allows them to practice food safety, traceability, quality control, and even export with fewer complexities and regulations than a finished product requires.
